On Sunday September 8th Samantha Ball, the wife of Jon from our finance department, took part in the Big North Run to raise money for The Big Tiny Steps Appeal. The Great North Run is the biggest half marathon in the UK and the world, with over 57,000 people taking part in its 13.1-mile course from Newcastle upon Tyne to South Shields. The Big Tiny Steps Appeal is an appeal raised by the Liverpool Women’s Charity who are raising money for their new neonatal unit.

They have pledged to raise £250,000 to introduce essential family facilities to make the new neonatal unit a truly first-class environment when it opens in 2020. Liverpool Women’s Neonatal unit is a recognised centre of excellence and they need support to continue to provide specialist care to the 1,000 babies who are born each year either prematurely or with a medical condition that requires specialist treatment.

This cause is incredibly close to Samantha’s heart. She told us “On 27th February 1985 I was born at Whiston Hospital 8 weeks prematurely, weighing just 3lb 1oz. As things weren’t looking great, I was rushed by ambulance to what is now known as the Liverpool Women’s Hospital. I was taken to the Special Care Baby Unit where I spent the first few months of my life.”

“It was because of the care I received when I was small enough to fit in the palm of your hand that I’m here today and able to take part in the Great North Run

Supported by her family Samantha was able to push through to the final stretch and complete the Great North Run is an impressive 1 hour and 56 minutes. Well done Samantha! Uren were touched by her personal story and we wanted to help support this wonderful cause that helps to save so many tiny babies like Samantha to live happy and healthy lives. With our donation Samantha was able to take the total raised to over £950!
