The black-eye bean, also often known as a black-eyed pea, is a small, creamy flavoured bean with a black mark where it was attached to the pod. Thought to originate from China, and then travelled to Africa in the hands of Arab traders, they are much used in American and African cooking. They are an essential ingredient in the American southern-style dish ‘Hoppin-John’, traditionally served on New Year’s Day.
Black eye beans are an incredibly versatile ingredient adding taste and texture to a wide variety of dishes, they are particularly popular for use in vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free dishes. They contain an impressive number of vitamins and minerals, are an excellent source of plant-based protein, iron, fibre, folate and antioxidants such as Vitamin A. Black eye beans are also low calorie and low fat and are thought to have a number of health benefits, making them a great addition to many healthy eating and diet foods.
IQF black eye beans have the same colour, creamy, nutty taste, soft yet firm texture, and impressive nutritional profile of fresh black eye beans, with the convenience and longer shelf life of a frozen product.
Process:
Uren’s black eye beans are sourced from our expert, accredited growers and can be traced right back to field. The black eye beans are harvested once the beans have matured, usually after around 60-100 days. Once harvested, the black eye beans are taken to the factory to be de-shelled, washed, and thoroughly inspected for defects. The beans are then rapidly frozen at extremely low temperatures to ensure maximum freshness and a free-flowing product.
Shelf life: 24 months from productions
Packaged in 12kg cartons
Minimum order quantity: 1 pallet.
