IQF black turtle beans are part of the kidney bean family and are native to Mexico, but are used broadly in Caribbean, Latin American, and Southwestern American cuisines. The black turtle bean is a medium-sized, matte black, oval bean that has a sweet taste, similar to the flavour of a mushroom, with a soft floury meat-like texture, which makes it extremely popular in vegan and vegetarian dishes as a substitute for meat.

Process

Uren’s IQF black turtle beans are sourced from our BRC accredited suppliers and are grown to industry standards.

Black turtle beans are grown throughout the year but are typically harvested

in late September to early October. When the black turtle beans have been harvested, they are taken back to the factory to be cleaned, quality checked and cut to size. The black turtle beans are then individually quick frozen at incredibly low temperatures to prevent the formation of ice crystals, lock in freshness, and ensure a free-flowing product.
